Environmental responsibility

With its Group-level policies, the TVO Group has committed to the principles of sustainable development, and environmental responsibility is an important part of the Group’s management system.

TVO carries its responsibility for the environment by identifying the environmental and energy efficiency aspects of its operations and by minimising the related adverse impacts. Operational targets are set in accordance with the principle of continuous improvement.

The most significant environmental aspect of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant is the production of climate-friendly electricity. During its entire lifecycle, nuclear electricity is as environmentally friendly an electricity production method in terms of greenhouse gas emissions as wind power, hydropower, and solar power. Through the electricity production at the OL1 and OL2 plant units, Finland avoids approximately 12 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually (compared with coal). In the future, approximately 11 million tonnes of CO2 emissions will be avoided annually with OL3's production.
