TVO has submitted a request to the City of Rauma for a planning reservation for a potential new battery energy storage system
TVO has requested a reservation for an industrial plot in the Lakari industrial area for its needs. The decision on whether to grant the reservation will be made by the Rauma city council in its meeting on Monday, October 21st. TVO is considering building a battery energy storage system on the plot.
The image above is from the battery energy storage facility at Olkiluoto, which is in the commissioning phase.
The request for a planning reservation was made to Rauma based on a recommendation from the national grid company Fingrid. According to Fingrid, the battery storage cannot be connected to the Olkiluoto 110 kV switchyard. Rauma is also a good logistical option for TVO's operations, and the City of Rauma has responded positively to TVO's preliminary plans.
If TVO decides to proceed with the construction of the new battery energy storage system, it would only be operational several years from now. According to TVO's current estimate, the new battery energy storage could be operational approximately 2–3 years after signing the delivery agreement.
Like the battery energy storage system already located at Olkiluoto, which is still in the commissioning phase, the planned storage could also be integrated into the national grid's protection system, known as system protection. System protection is needed to balance the electricity grid, for example, when Olkiluoto 3 disconnects from the grid unexpectedly during a disturbance.
